Elevator Pitch
Your elevator pitch describes your strengths and skills so you can quickly answer the questions, “Tell me about yourself?” and “What are you looking for in a position?”
- My name is…
- I’m currently looking for…
- I have experience in (or with)..
Example: Hello, my name is Joan. I’m currently looking for full-time employment as a customer support specialist. I have 20 years of experience in the financial services industry. I have excellent problem-solving and communication skills, plus practical experience with multiple helpdesk software applications.
Cover Letter
This is your opportunity to explain how you are uniquely qualified for a position. Tell the potential employer something about yourself that might not be clear from your resume.
First Paragraph
Address a specific person, if possible, and tell the employer what job you are applying to. If applicable, mention who referred you.
Middle Section
Sell yourself! Describe your relevant skills using keywords from the job posting, show how you’d use your experience in the new job, and say why you’re applying.
Last Paragraph
Thank the employer and express your eagerness to hear back.
Resume that Shows Your Career Accomplishments
Tailor your resume to show your skills that relate to the specific job you are applying for, making sure to focus more on achievements, less on job duties.
Key points to include:
- Your most recent relevant jobs — within the past 15 years.
- Results and outcomes, like “exceeded fundraising targets.”
- Transferable skills from things like volunteering — especially if you have gaps in your work history.
- With your elevator pitch, cover letter strategy, and updated resume in good shape, you’re ready to begin applying for jobs. For more tips on how to manage your job hunt, see the next page.
